The food and beverage supply chain is one of the largest contributors to CO₂ emissions globally, generating over three times the emissions of the entire commercial aviation industry. Current efforts to address these emissions have been gradual and incremental, but the scale of the problem demands a more radical approach. Recognizing this, Relocalize has developed an innovative solution that entirely reimagines food production and distribution.

Why We Invested

Relocalize’s innovative micro-factory model allows grocery retailers to integrate food production with their distribution network, directly addressing CO₂ emissions from transport and cold storage in their supply chains. It can deliver a better quality product at lower on-the-shelf cost, delivering value to the food and beverage industry while lowering emissions. Through the Origo program, Cycle Momentum invests in innovative technology with high potential for emission reduction.

A Revolutionary Approach: Decentralized Micro-Factories

Relocalize’s vision centers on a decentralized production model to eliminate traditional “chains” in food systems. Through a network of autonomous micro-factories, this model enables food and beverages to be produced closer to consumers, minimizing transportation emissions and enhancing sustainability. Beginning with packaged ice—one of the most resource-intensive products to transport—the company focuses on primarily water-based products, where localized production can make the greatest immediate impact.

Origo Investment: A Milestone on the Path to Change

The recent investment from Origo represents a pivotal step forward for Relocalize. This funding not only supports the company’s ambitious goals but also opens doors to a network of like-minded investors and partners committed to sustainable climate solutions. With this backing, Relocalize is well-positioned to fast-track market adoption and strengthen its role within the climate tech community.

This strategic partnership allows Relocalize to demonstrate the benefits of hyper-localized production, which reduces waste, cuts emissions, and ensures fresher products for consumers. These efforts support broader goals of green economic growth both within Quebec and on a wider scale, advancing Relocalize’s role in reshaping the industry.

Next Steps: Paving the Way for Scalable, Local Production

The company has outlined several key milestones for the next period:

  1. Proof of Concept (POC): A demonstration phase is underway to validate the environmental and economic benefits of Relocalize’s micro-factory technology, proving it can both reduce GHG emissions and cut costs.
  2. First Full-Scale Deployment: The company’s inaugural full-scale micro-factory is set to launch in the United States in Q1 of 2025.
  3. Rapid Expansion: Following the initial deployment, Relocalize is preparing to scale up with a network of thousands of micro-factories across North America, creating a sustainable, distributed production system.

Through these innovations, Relocalize is paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient food and beverage industry, showing that systemic change is possible through localized, emissions-efficient production.
