Challenge: clean source of energy

BY:

Cycle Momentum and Cascades join forces to launch an open innovation program that will allow you to deploy your heating technology to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

« With and for our partners, we continue to bring out the full potential of materials, people and ideas. As pioneers of yesterday and tomorrow, we always have our sleeves rolled up for the benefit of sustainable development. »

PARTNERS :

According to Cascades’ 4th sustainable development plan the company’s objectives are to :

REDUCE BY

38,7%

GHG emissions (scopes 1+2) of its mills

(in kg of CO2eq/TM)

REDUCE BY

27,5%

GHG emissions (scopes 1+2) from its other activities

(in kg of CO2eq)

To achieve these 2030 targets, based on the 2019 baseline year, Cascades plans to implement energy efficiency projects, renewable electricity purchases and a transition to carbon-reducing technologies.

Natural gas is the main fuel used by Cascades in more than 15 of its facilities. Annually, between 3 million and 28 million m3 of natural gas are burned in each of these facilities, producing between 113,000 and 1,000,000 GJ of heat. On a company-wide basis, this heat is used to:

To produce steam

70%

Paper manufacturing and building heating

To produce hot air

30%

Manufacture of moulded pulp products

The combustion of these volumes of natural gas emits between 5,700 and 53,000 tons of CO2eq per year. It is with the ultimate goal of reducing these GHG emissions that Cascades is launching this challenge.

Objectifs

1.

Identify a renewable source of heat or fuel to replace fossil-based natural gas

2.

Identify new technologies that can serve as the basis for new facilities/plants in the future

3.

Explore technical options and companies that can provide relevant solutions

4.

Develop and execute a pilot project with a partner company with possible financial support from Cascades
